Holy Ground
Exodus 3:5
"Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground."
Moses was tending sheep when the Lord called to him from the burning bush. The ground was holy because God had made His presence known there. Moses was told to remove his sandals and listen with reverence. The Lord then spoke of His concern for the suffering of His people and His purpose to deliver them. An ordinary workday became a turning point because Moses paid attention to the God who addressed him.
We should not treat holiness as a special feeling produced by a location. God is holy in His character, and His presence calls for reverence and obedience. Through Jesus Christ we may approach the Father with confidence, yet that confidence never makes Him common. Hebrews urges us to serve God acceptably “with reverence and godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28). The One who welcomes us also searches our hearts and calls us away from careless worship, hidden sin, and indifference to those who suffer.
Pause before you rush through the next prayer or Bible reading. Remember whom you are addressing. Ask the Lord to show you where familiarity has dulled your attention, then listen to His Word. Moses' encounter led toward a costly assignment; genuine worship also reaches into action. Is there a person whose distress you have ignored or an instruction you have postponed? Meet God with an open heart, and carry the reverence of that meeting into your next act of obedience.
