Holy Calling
2 Timothy 1:9
"Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began."
Your calling begins with the God who saved you. Paul reminds Timothy that God's purpose and grace come before human achievement. You do not earn a place in His purpose by constructing an impressive record. In Christ, you have received grace that brings you into a life set apart for Him. This holy calling belongs to every believer. Wherever He places you, your life is to bear witness to His truth and goodness.
Paul gives this reminder while urging Timothy to overcome timidity and remain faithful to the gospel. Calling does not remove the possibility of opposition. It gives us a reason to stand in the strength God supplies. Earlier in the chapter, Timothy is told to stir up the gift of God within him, and to remember that God has given a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:6–7). The gift needs faithful use, the message needs courage, and the heart needs love. Grace equips us for that response.
What responsibility have you been neglecting because you feel inadequate? Bring it before God and ask for wisdom about the next step. Prepare honestly, accept instruction, and put the gift you have received to work. Serve the person already within reach. Speak of Christ when the opportunity comes. Fulfill your ordinary responsibilities with care. A holy calling becomes visible through willing obedience, and the God who called you supplies grace to serve Him faithfully.
