Abounding Grace
Romans 5:20
"But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound."
Paul does not minimize the damage of sin. He magnifies the power of God's grace revealed in Jesus Christ. Sin brought condemnation and death; Christ's obedience opens the way to righteousness and life for those who receive Him by faith (Romans 5:17–19). Where the record against us seemed overwhelming, God's gift in His Son proved greater. Grace meets us at the place where we could never save ourselves and brings us into a new standing before the Father.
Paul anticipates a dangerous misunderstanding: if grace abounds, should we continue in sin? His answer is emphatic: “God forbid” (Romans 6:1–2). In union with Christ, believers have died to sin's former dominion and are called to walk in newness of life. Grace forgives and transforms. We need not hide a failure, nor should we defend it. We can confess it, receive God's mercy, and yield our lives to the Holy Spirit's work. The abundance of grace gives courage to change.
If your conscience is troubled, bring the matter into the light today. Name your sin honestly before the Lord and make any needed confession or restitution to people affected. Receive the forgiveness promised in Christ, then take a practical step away from the pattern. If you have been imagining yourself beyond God's mercy, look again to the cross. The gift of grace is greater than your ability to earn it, and its power reaches into the life you live after you receive it.
