Psalm 16:11

Psalm 16:11

"Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

David found fullness of joy in the presence of the Lord. His song does not point us toward a technique for producing a happy feeling. It directs us to a Person. The God who shows the path of life also gives the joy of knowing Him. We can be grateful for good circumstances, but they cannot bear the weight of becoming our deepest source of life. In fellowship with God, we find a joy that remains available even when a season is uncertain.

Peter later quoted this psalm when preaching the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2:25–32). Its fullest hope reaches beyond David to the risen Christ, whom death could not hold. That is why Christian joy has substance: the Savior is alive, and through Him we are welcomed into the Father's presence. Worship and prayer turn our attention toward this reality. They may begin while our emotions are troubled. As we listen to God's Word and remember what Christ has accomplished, our hearts can gain strength to praise without pretending that every difficulty has ended.

Make room for the Lord's presence today. Read a portion of Scripture slowly, thank Him for the risen Jesus, and speak honestly about what has been stealing your joy. If grief is present, bring that too; you are welcome before Him as you are. Then follow the path of life He shows you in one practical act of obedience or love. Joy grows as we remain near the Lord and walk with Him, rather than waiting for perfect conditions before we rejoice.
